Rev. Mr. Butler's sermon and Gen. Hopkins' eurlogy during the obsequies of Truman B. Ransom, Colonel of the ninth regiment

A Congregational clergyman and popular lecturer, Butler details the life of Truman Bishop Ransom, from his humble beginnings as an orphan to his graduation at West Point and his later life as an engineer, teacher, orator, politician, and military officer. A former president of Norwich University, Ransom was second in command of the Ninth Infantry under General Franklin Pierce, and was killed during the storming of Chapultepec. Butler reminds the audience of the horrors of war and how the lessons learned from war are forgotten as quickly as the memory of the men who fight and die in them.
