A citizen's appeal in regard to the war with Mexico : A lecture, delivered at Lyceum Hall, Lynn, January 16, 1848

This lecture by Unitarian pastor Charles Chauncy Shackford revisits the annexation of Texas and the extension of slavery as the underlying causes of the war with Mexico and cites the aggression of the U. S. Army on the Rio Grande as the pretext for war in 1846. Shackford questions the wisdom of spending millions in funding the war and giving land to military personnel, while civilians live in poverty and denied property. He concludes with a warning against the possibility of war with Great Britain.
