Zacatecas Jauy 18 1849 [corrected to February]

My Dr. Father.

I write you but a very

few lines to inform you of my

entire convalescence from a severe

Typhus fever which brought me to

the borders of the grave. For many

days I was delirious & did not

know even my student & companion

Mr. Campbell, who has nursed me with

the most assiduous care. Dr. Jenkins

has attended me most kindly through

all my sickness. My excellent friend

Dr. Aut. Castrillon not knowing that

Physicians attend each other without

remuneration called a consultation [page blurred]

the principle physicians in town, [page blurred]

to pay them himself. I was

four times reported dead, & a great

deal of mourning took place & thank

God for his undeserved [page torn & blurred]

comfort & assistance to my family.

I am still very deaf, my sight very weak,

and my head drunken, so that you must

excuse scrawling. I have recd. a letter

from you somewhere about the middle

of Dec. (it is in my trunk & I am not strong

enough to search for it). One fr. mother by

Mr. B[?], & one fr. sister Dec 4th.

I understand that the $500 entrusted

to Mr. Addicks halted in Saltillo, as

Addicks had to go back to the city of Mexico.

I have sent another hundred on to pick

the first up. If these sums ever reach you

spend them freely, after executing my

commissions [? - edge of paper blurred]. Do not forget the 20 lbs. of

very best Mocha Coffee for Dr. Antonio. The

frock coat from Turrell's [illegible]

will be in about ten days. My best
