Major-General Ethan Allen Hitchcock

This portrait of Hitchcock dates from the U.S. Civil War after he had attained the rank of Major General. During the war with Mexico, Hitchcock served in both the northern and southern campaigns, beginning as Lieutenant Colonel of the Third Infantry Regiment with Taylor's Army of Occupation at Corpus Christi. He participated in the Siege of Veracruz and served as Inspector General and advisor to Scott right up to the entry into Mexico City. An important account of the war is included in his book Fifty Years in Camp and Field (published posthumously in 1909).
