This is a title page from the published memoirs of a German-educated physician-scientist whose personally-funded scientific expedition was interrupted by the war. Arrested and detained by Mexican authorities in the state of Chihuahua, Wislizenus was freed by Alexander Doniphan and the First Missouri Volunteers. Wislizenus remained with them until their return to St. Louis.
