War with Mexico : a Sermon Preached in the North Church, Portsmouth, N.H., Sept. 7, 1845

Pastor Rufus W. Clark of Portsmouth, New Hampshire preaches against the Mexican War at the North Church. He calls for peace, arguing that Jesus taught that there should be good will towards all men. He lists reasons why the United States should not be at war with Mexico by arguing that there is no just cause for it. He also argues that the war is purely for territorial aggrandizement and the perpetuation of slavery. He believes that Mexico is an unfortunate nation and the United States should not be throwing more obstacles at the country. He then raises problems with war such as the amount of death, the expense, and the criminality. He closes by warning against the extension of slavery into newly acquired territory.
