Lieutenant U.S. Grant and Lieutenant Alexander Hays in 1845

A young Lieutenant Grant at left, with Lieutenant Alexander Hays, at right. This halftone photomechanical print reproduced a daguerreotype, probably taken at Camp Salubrity, Louisiana, in 1845. According to the caption of the photomechanical print appearing in Hamlin Garland's biography of Grant in 1898, the original 1845 daguerreotype was at that time in the possession of Mrs. Agnes M. Hays Gormly.
