One of America's most prolific female composers Augusta Browne Garrett(1820-1882) and poet Mary Balmanno of Brooklyn combined talents to produce this piece dedicated to former Whig presidential candidate and Senator Henry Clay, whose son Henry Clay, Jr., was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista.
