Santa Fe

Lieutenant Abert drew his view of Santa Fe from the south sometime after his arrival there on September 27, 1846. Fort Marcy, flying the American flag, may be seen on the heights overlooking the town. Another U.S. flag flies from the main plaza in the center of the print, where one can see the parrish church and the Governor's Palace. A local couple as well as prickly-pear and perhaps sotol plants decorate the foreground to give the perspective view a sense of scale. See Sandweiss, Stewart, and Huseman, Eyewitness to War, pp. 141-142, no. 25.
