Battle of San Gabriel, California

A hand-colored (stereotyped) engraving showing the Battle of San Gabriel, California that took place on January 8, 1849 between a mixed force of American sailors and marines (dressed in blue) under Commodore Robert F. Stockton, together with a few members of General Stephen W. Kearney's "Army of the West," shooting at Mexican, Californio, and Indian troops (dressed in green). The American soldiers (actually U.S. sailors, marines, some U.S. Army, and militia) have formed a hollow square formation around their horses and baggage as a defense tactic against the Mexican cavalry who approach from both the left and right, directly into the line of fire causing devastating casulaties. The image was clipped from Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion and the associated text below the image has been trimmed.
