The Twelve Months Volunteer : Orizaba, from a Height Above Jalapa

A printed view of the snow covered volcano Orizaba and neighboring mountains from a height above Jalapa along the National Road. This image depicts American cavalry and infantry (the twelve months volunteers) as they commenced the return march on May 6, 1847 after General Scott discharged them on May 4 and General Patterson ordered them to Vera Cruz on May 5 so as to return to the United States through New Orleans. The troops arrived at Vera Cruz on May 8 and reached the New Orleans harbor a few days later.
