Notes of a Military Reconnoissance From Fort Leavenworth: San Diego from the Old Fort

A lithograph print based upon Stanley's view of San Diego from the old Fort that depicts a small town of a few adobe houses "situated at the foot of a high hill on a sand flat, two miles wide, reaching from the head of San Diego bay to False bay." At the most tiresome portion of their journey, the men fought a skrimish with Californians at San Pascual on their way to San Diego in early December 1848. They arrived there exhausted on December 12, with Stanley having made few sketches after crossing the Colorado. [This lithograph is from the book "Notes of a Military Reconnoissance. From Fort Leavenworth, In Missouri, to San Diego, in California, Including part of the Arkansas, Del Norte, and Gila Rivers" written by William H. Emory, oppoisite page 128. See Ben Huseman, "San Diego from the Old Fort: No. 29," in Eyewitness to War?: Prints and Daguerreotypes of the Mexican War, 1846-1848. Sandweiss, Stewart, and Huseman.
