Notes of a Military Reconnoissance From Fort Leavenworth: No. 1 – No. 8 [Untitled Flora]

A lithograph print of sketches of various cacti and shrubs encountered along Kearny's march with special attention paid to the shapes, clusters, spines, branches, and flowers of the plants. Fig. 1 is labeled as Mammalaria Vivipara, with the possible various common names of beehive cactus, biscuit cactus, pincushion cactus and others. Fig. 2, labeled Mamillaria Fasciculata is sometimes referred to as hedgehog cactus. Fig. 3 Mammalaria Macrocarpa is sometimes called fishhook cactus. Fig. 4 Echinocactus Wislizeni is sometimes called southwestern barrel cactus. Fig. 5 Echinocactus Emoryi is a variety of barrel cactus. 6. Peniocereus Greggii is sometimes referred to as night blooming cereus or Arizona queen of the night. 7. Opuntia Microcarpa is sometimes called small-fruit cactus. 8. Opuntia Violacea or Opuntia Macrocentra is a prickly pear. Throughout his march, Emory documented the cacti found on his journey by gathering specimens and sketches to send back to the United States to be studied and identified by botanist George Englemann of St. Louis. In his report on the cacti Englemann noted "the skillful artist who has drawn all these figures, Mr. J. M. Stanly" (John Mix Stanley). [This lithograph is from the book "Notes of a Military Reconnoissance From Fort Leavenworth, In Missouri, to San Diego, in California, Including part of the Arkansas, Del Norte, and Gila Rivers" written by William H. Emory, between pages 158 and 159.]
