Santa Anna was a prominent military and political leader of Mexico and served as president on several occasions including 1833-36 (when he overthrew Bustamente and during his term Texas declared independence), 1841-45 (following the Pastry War with the French who attacked Vera Cruz), He assumed military control of Mexican troops throughout the Mexican American war (in 1846 after deposing Mariano Paredes) until the fall of Mexico City in September 1847.
