Notes of the Mexican War: Bombardment of Vera Cruz, March 24, 1847

A print of the bombardment of Vera Cruz on March 24, 1847. This print depicts a sketch of the American batteries on land firing mortar shells into the city of Vera Cruz and in the background beyond the city is the Castle of San Juan de Ulloa on its small island and American Naval ships anchored off the coast. Oswandel writes on March 23 that while General Worth's battery fired on the city and was the focus of enemy fire, volunteers worked on establishing battery No. 5 closer to the city among chaparrals which, under the command of Captain Breese of the US Navy was used to fire directly on the Fort Santiago on March 24. Oswandel writes "About noon our battery No. 5 was completed and ready for destruction of life and property." [This lithograph is from the book "Notes of the Mexican War 1846-47-48, Revised 1885, Illustrated" by J. Jacob Oswandel, page 91.]
