Notes of the Mexican War: Castle de Perote, Mexico - Mounting Guard

A print of U.S. troops occupying the Castle de Perote in Mexico (originally Castle of San Carlos de Perote built by the Spanish in 1768, it is a central point between Vera Cruz and Puebla on the National Road). The images ultimately derives from a sketch by Private James T. Shannon. On April 24, 1847 Oswandel learned that General Worth and his troops were in full possession of the castle (captured on April 22) and town after the Mexican troops had abandoned it and on May 8, 1847 Oswandel and the troop of volunteers arrived at the city before marching further toward Puebla on June 11. Throughout its history, even before the war the Castle de Perote served as a prison; during the war both the Mexican and American armies utlized it in this manner. [This lithograph is from the book "Notes of the Mexican War 1846-47-48, Revised 1885, Illustrated" by J. Jacob Oswandel, page 179.]
