"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Fall of Major Ringgold

A print of the Fall of Major Ringgold which depicts the moment of his (and his horse's) death during the battle of Palo Alto as he is knocked over on his horse while still holding his sword and several cannons and US cavalry engage in battle in the background. This illustration was created based off the descriptions of eyewitnesses. Colonel Payne witnessed Major Ringgold's death which was caused by a six-pound shot that had struck his right thigh and passed through his horse and then his left thigh. [This print is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande" by Thomas Bangs Thorpe, frontispiece]
