"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Interior of Fort Brown - The Graves of Major Brown and Lieutenant Stevens at the foot of the Flag Staff

A printed illustrated title page by T. B. Thorpe for his book "Our Army on the Rio Grande." The print depicts the graves of Major J. Brown and Lieutenant George Stevens at the foot of the American Flag Staff within Fort Brown (atop the fortification wall a soldier stands guard and the city of Matamoras can be seen across the Rio Grande in the background beyond the fort). Stevens participated in the Battle of Palo Alto and later drowned while crossing a river while Brown was the commander of Fort Brown and died from his wounds recieved during the fort's bombardment.
