"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Flag of the Tampico Veterans

A print of the tricolored flag of the Tampico Veterans which depicts the Mexican national emblem of an eagle eating a snake to which is added the inscription "Batallon Guarda Costa de Tanpico." This Mexican banner, raised at the Battle of Palo Alto, was torn by American artillery, and later, after the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, it was concealed by a Mexican soldier who was taken prisoner. The U.S. troops took the captured flag to their national capitol in Washington, D.C. as a trophy. [This print is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande," by Thomas Bangs Thorpe, page 103]
