"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: General Taylor's Head Quarters, Near the city of Matamoros

A print of General Taylor's Headquarters near the city of Matamoras. This print, probably based upon a sketch made in the field by Thorpe, depicts a view of four pitched tents with a soldier standing guard, inside of one tent (that has a horse tied on the outside) are two men in discussion at a table. The whole is shaded by a motte of what appears to be mesquite trees. General Taylor made his way to camp on May 13, decided to attack Matamoras on May 14, had all preparations for an attack prepared on May 17, and on May 18 American troops had crossed the Rio Grande to initiate a parley and establish troops in Matamoras. According to the plan or map of Matamoras in "Our Army on the Rio Grande," General Taylor had two headquarters, the first was on the opposite bank of the Rio Grande before the Americans occupied the city (where he met with Meixcan General Reguena to discuss terms of surrender) and the second was in between the river and the city after Matamoros had been taken. [This print is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande," by Thomas Bangs Thorpe, opposite page 125].
