"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Mexican Farmer's Hut

The image in the print "Mexican Farmer's Hut" or "jacal" consists of a small reed thatched roof building (which is made of reed woven together similar to a basket) in the doorway of which is a young Mexican woman. Out front sits a male figure on a bench talking with a man on a mule. In the foreground are pigs and chickens. Various types of Mexican flora appear to the side on the left of the hut and behind a fence to the right of it. During the American occupation of the city of Matamoras, Thorpe describes visiting this cottage, after crossing the Rio Grande by ferry on the road to Matamoras, and witnessing an American soldier sitting on the bench outside the hut eating hot corn. [This print is from Thorpe's book "Our Army on the Rio Grande," page 137].
