"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Halls of Justice and Head Quarters of our Troops

A print of the Halls of Justice and Head Quarters of the U.S. troops in Matamoras during the occupation. This print depicts a two story brick building with balcony. Three U.S. soldiers may be seen, one in the doorway, one to the side, and another standing guard. A laborer walks by with a load on his back. Cannon or mortar balls are piled in the foreground. As Thorpe and the troops explored the plaza and calabozo (city prison of Matamoros which was located behind the halls of the city justices) they discovered a depot for military stores. Thorpe's brief description of the interior states that "the court room was covered with envelopes of official documents ,franked from different capitals of the departments, and from the city of Mexico, directed to the principal officers who comannded the Mexican forces against General Taylor, leaving the supposition that the room was displaced of justice, and occupied by General Arista as his head quarters." [This lithograph is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande," by Thorpe, page 143].
