"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Chapel de la Capilla

A print of the Chapel de la Capilla which Thorpe visited during the American occupation of Matamoros. Thorpe states that this building was used by Mexican commanders for military purposes including ammunition storage and as a hospital for the wounded. It later returned to its original function as a house of worship with an altar for practicing the Catholic Christian faith. This print depicts a group of women dressed in white robes kneeling in prayer at the entrance of the building. [This print is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande, " by Thorpe, page 147].
