"Our Army" on the Rio Grande by T. B. Thorpe: Barracks, Suburbs of Matamoros

A print of the barracks in the suburbs of Matamoros which Thorpe describes visiting during the American occupation of the city of Matamoros. This strongly fortified brick guard house had thick walls and a missing roof but had recently been occupied by troops and when you ascend the steps to the upper walls you could see the inner breastwork and the red tower (which the soldiers had previously been interested in during the bombardment of Fort Brown). [This print is from the book "Our Army on the Rio Grande," by Thorpe, page 150]
