Our Army at Monterey by T. B. Thorpe: Monterey and its approaches

A lithographed map of Monterey and Its Approaches during the battle from September 20-24 in 1846 based upon a map drawn by Lieutenant Calvin Benjamin of the U.S. Army's Fourth Artillery. The topographic map shows the relative locations of the city, Mexican fortifications, the Rio San Juan, General Taylor's Camp near the San Domingo Grove, the direct routes taken by General Quitmann's and Colonel Garland's troops, and the indirect route taken by General Worth's second division, consisting of the commands of Colonel Childs and Captain Smith, including the 5th and 7th Infantries. Other details include the heights stormed by Colonel Childs and Captain Smith, General Arista's house, the citadel, city plazas, churches and cemeteries, as well as topgraphical features such as areas of cornfields and chaparral. The map orients the city below the Rio San Juan de Monterey with Independece Hill on the Monterey side of the river and Federation Hill on the opposite bank. [This map is from the book "Our Army at Monterey." by Thomas BangsThorpe, opposite page 9]. Lieutenant Benjamin later served with General Scott and died in the assault on Mexico City on September 13, 1847.
