The Warlike Dead in Mexico : Poetry by Mrs. Balmanno Music composed and dedicated (by Special Permission) to the Hon. Henry Clay by Miss Augusta Browne

Sheet music for "The Warlike Dead in Mexico" for the piano, with an illustrated chromolithograph print cover depicting a central portrait of Henry Clay under an American eagle and small scenes of important battles are framed by colorful filigree. The battles depicted are Monterey, Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, and Vera Cruz. One of America's most prolific female composers, Augusta Browne Garrett (1820-1882) and poet Mary Balmanno of Brooklyn combined talents to produce this piece dedicated to former Whig presidential candidate and Senator Henry Clay, whose son Henry Clay, Jr., was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista. The lyrics and poem commemorate the fallen American soldiers. Handwritten text goes across the top and right side of the cover; however, some of the words are illegible due to the page having been trimmed.
