Palo Alto Grand March : Composed and respectfully dedicated to the Memory of Major Ringold by Thomas H. Chambers Arranged by S. Bassford

Sheet music for "Palo Alto Grand March," composed by Thomas H. Chambers and arranged by S. W. Bassford, dedicated to the memory of Major Samuel Ringgold, who died in the Battle of Palo Alto in May 1846. The toned lithograph sheet music cover includes an eagle, an equestrian portrait of a U. S. officer (probably intended to represent General Zachary Taylor), a vignette of the Siege of Fort Brown and others more representative of the Battle of Resaca de la Palma (showing a U. S. dragoon -- probably representing the "gallant" Captain Charles A. May charging a cannon tended by Mexican General La Vega, a second cavalry charge, and a close-quarters engagement in a mesquite thicket). These are surrounded by scrolls, acanthus leaves, and other vegetation.
