Students, faculty, and staff members are invited to participate in an open conversation to learn about the Afro Latino culture. The Afro-Latino Roundtable event will take place from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the UTA Central Library Studio classroom on the first floor.

Milaun Murry, Experiential Learning librarian, stated that the event works to bring people together from across the university.

“This event intends to provide a platform for students to either talk about their experience as an Afro-Latino on campus or to learn more about what it means to be Afro-Latino,” Milaun said.

Milaun stated she identifies as an Afro-Latina because her family is from Belize in Central America.

She noted that being a person of mixed-race ancestry can be difficult to explain because you don’t fit into one recognizable group of individuals. So, you must regularly explain your family’s history to new people you meet.

“That is a challenge that a lot of our students' face, too. When they are celebrating their Latin roots and must prove that side of themselves,” Milan said. “It also can be on the other end of colorism. It could be a person of a lighter complexation having to prove they are indeed black because they look more Spanish. There are a lot of students on campus that deal with those types of struggles.”

There is no set program for the roundtable. No speaker will address the group attending the event. The event is just an opportunity for people to come together, learn from each other, ask questions, share their experiences, and educate people about the Afro-Latino culture. It is just going to be an open conversation. No registration is required to attend the event.
