Drs. Amy Austin, Jinny Choi, and Ignacio Ruiz-Pérez were awarded a UTA CARES Innovation Grant for their project, “SPAN 3315: Advanced Spanish Composition.” The UTA Modern Languages department faculty received the grant to develop an OER that would help students develop the strong writing skills they will need in future professions.

The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, helps educators adopt and create open educational resources (OER), which are free course materials that are licensed so others can revise and reuse the content. The OER project will save UTA students enrolled in the course approximately $2,340 in Fall 2020.

Austin said that the purpose of creating the OER was “to ease the financial burden for our students.” She added, “In developing OER, we are also able to focus the material to fit the specific needs of our students in this gateway course to prepare them for success in upper-division classes.”
