As a part of Black History month, UTA Libraries will host the Black Hair-itage Panel. People attending the event will be able to learn about hair and hairstyles in the Black community through open conversation and discussion.

Milaun Murry, Experiential Learning librarian, stated that the Black Hair-itage event is designed to open up some of the conversations around the stigmas that exist when it comes to black hair.

“With this event, we will host a panel of individuals who have had their own Black hair journey. They answer a couple of different questions related to that experience,” Milaun said. “Then the floor is opened up to questions from the audience.”

Then after the panel, there will be a couple of demonstrations. A stylist will be present to answer any questions about the technical issues involved with Black hair in case any students with Black hair are interested in learning more about their hair texture and how to take care of their hair.

Milaun stated that these open discussions are critical to educating people with factual information because there have been stigmas that people in the Black community have experienced in their professional and personal lives. The general public has also propagated stigmas about what Black hair means and what it should or should not look like.

“It has been an issue that has always been around,” Milaun said. “It is just kind of a conversation that needed to happen.”

The Black Hair-itage panel runs from Noon – 1 p.m., followed by questions with the stylist and demonstrations from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. The event is in the atrium and the parlor on the sixth floor of the UTA Central Library building.

Free food will be provided at the event, but people must RSVP through MavOrgs in advance. People can register online at https://mavorgs.campuslabs.com/engage/event/8655380
