A document that makes up the cornerstone of our republic, the Constitution, was celebrated at the UTA Central Library on Friday, Sept. 15. Library staff members gave out gift bags to students as part of the Constitution Day celebration.

The National Archives website states that each year, Sept. 17 is designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia, PA, in 1787 and fully ratified by all 13 states in 1790.

The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation and was initially made up of seven articles that outlined the framework and constraints of the national government.

After the Constitution was adopted, the Bill of Rights was added, which guarantees civil rights and liberties to individuals, such as freedom of press, speech and religion. It also sets rules for due process of law and reverses powers not delegated to the federal government to citizens of the United States.

Troy Black, a Metadata Specialist and the UTA Libraries Federal Depository Library Coordinator, stated that Constitution Day is an excellent reminder of the Constitution's role in our everyday lives.

"The Constitution is the foundation of our government," Troy said. "It is important to get these pocket Constitutions into the hands of our students so they know more about their rights and freedoms."

As students entered the library, they were each given a gift bag that contained a pocket Constitution, information about free government resources, bookmarks and candy. Students could also enter into a raffle for prizes that included a feather-tipped pen.

Emily Willis, an education major, stated events like this help encourage people to learn more about this document, which plays a crucial role in everyone's lives.

"I think today is important so that we can build on what we know and make informed decisions when we vote," Emily said. "This helps to make our country a better place."

UTA Libraries has great resources available to learn more about United States history, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence through the library website or in person.
