Educational Goals

The start of the new year makes us take an inward look at oneself and contemplate a personal change. Whether that is to lose weight, get organized, or take advantage of new opportunities. This year, I’m taking my resolution seriously with education in mind.

Over the years, I have had a strong desire to return to the classroom but did not have the means or the time to do so. It was a pipe dream that was in the back of my mind, but one I never thought possible. But that all changed when I started working at UTA Libraries in 2022.

I found out that the university encourages educational growth by providing funding for staff to further their higher education dreams.

The last time I was in a classroom was when I graduated from UTA in 2008 with my bachelor’s degree in journalism. As a point of context, Zune was still a popular MP3 player with students.

When I graduated, I was ready to start the next chapter of my life, seeking adventure in my career, which I did as a reporter. Life in a newsroom is exciting because you get to know the community you’re covering really well. You never knew what you would face daily, from breaking news to city council meetings to in-depth feature stories.

As I covered public meetings and events as a reporter, I felt that I could do more working from the inside using the skills acquired over my 15-year career. So, starting Jan. 16, I will become a student once again working toward earning my master's degree in public administration.

I will tell you that I am a little nervous about starting this educational journey, but the support and encouragement of family and friends have helped tremendously.

So, if you’re looking to make a change in your personal or professional life, the educational opportunities offered here at UTA are limitless. It is something I highly encourage my fellow staff members to seek out. If interested look into the Employee Tuition Affordability Program.

It is OK to be nervous about making a life change. However, don’t let that fear of change keep you from taking an opportunity that can be life changing.

I want to wish my fellow Mavericks a successful semester. Good luck with your studies and all your future endeavors.
