Dr. David Ewing was awarded a UTA CARES Innovation Grant for his project, “Evaluating the Effectiveness of OER Products in a First Year Engineering Course.” Ewing, the director for the courses Engineering 1250 and 1251 in the UTA Engineering Department, received the grant to implement OER products in two sections of Engineering Problem Solving.

The UTA CARES Grant Program, managed by UTA Libraries, helps educators adopt and create open educational resources (OER), which are free course materials that are licensed so others can revise and reuse the content. Ewing’s project will save UTA students enrolled in the course approximately $23,000 in Spring 2021.

Dr. Ewing stated, “OER resources allow our students to focus on their studies without having to worry about how they are going to pay for necessary educational materials such as textbooks. Our hope is that, by removing this additional financial burden, our students are better able to focus, succeed in their classwork, and graduate on time. These students will become the next generation of industry and community leaders, showcasing the values of the UTA Mavericks to all around them.”
