Monday, Jan. 16, is the day that we remember the life and the important contributions made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King and countless individuals worked together to make advancements in civil rights and humanity for all people spanning generations. The effects of their work can be seen and felt today.

With that said, it is important to treat today with honor and not just a day off work or school to attend a barbecue.

During his address on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., King addressed the crowd and shared his dream for a future where hate does not have a home.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," King said. "I have a dream today."

One of the best ways to honor Dr. King's dream is to find a way to make your corner of the world a better place for everyone. This act can be as simple as extending a hand of friendship to a stranger, volunteering your time with a nonprofit, or doing a random act of kindness.

King advocated using kindness and love to drive out hate permanently. By giving back, it accomplishes that goal.

He shared his thoughts about how people can eliminate hate from the world.

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars," King said. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; Only love can do that."

If you are looking for a way to celebrate the day, the city of Arlington's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Advancing the Dream" Celebration will take place from Jan. 13-16, of which UTA is a sponsor.
