For the Love of Sneakers
UTA Libraries is hosting a special event for people interested in sneakers and the culture connected with them. For the Love of Sneakers will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the first-floor Studios classroom at the UTA Central Library.
Milaun Murry, Experiential Learning librarian, stated that through this event, people would get the chance to learn about the connection that people have with sneakers and the cultural role they play in the community.
"For The Love of Sneakers” is an event that's meant to look at the historical and cultural significance that sneakers have had," Milaun said. "Then we will open the floor to how people use sneakers to represent their identity and show who they are."
Murry stated that along with the talk she is giving about the historical and cultural aspects that shoes have played, students will have the opportunity to paint some 3D-printed Converse keychains made by the FabLab.
Information will be given about how the embroidery machines in the FabLab can be used to customize Converse shoes to add custom stitches, followed by a demonstration.
Examples of this shoe customization will be displayed from the first For the Love of Sneakers event.
"My mother is a sneaker head, so she is graciously giving me access to her shoe closet," Milaun said. "I'm going to be bringing in some really awesome Converses, some Air Force Ones, and things like that to be on display,"
Milaun stated that the event would provide great opportunities to have casual conversations about shoes and the impact shoes have made culturally.
