The spring semester got off to a cold start as students made their journey back to campus on Tuesday, Jan. 16. After entering the UTA Central Library, students shared their thoughts about the first day of classes and career goals with staff members.

Paige Nguyen, a biology major, said her ultimate goal after graduating is to become a physician assistant. She has always had a desire to help people and feels that this career path will provide that opportunity.

“I was always interested in learning about the human body,” Paige said. “I looked into becoming a doctor, and it is not obtainable with my grades, but PA school is obtainable.”

Paige shared that as the semester progresses, she reminds her fellow students to take timeout for themselves away from the books. Remember to de-stress, have fun and enjoy life because your mental health is something that does not need to be neglected.

Jason Gideon, an industrial engineering major, stated that studying what you are passionate about is important.

During his time here at the university, Jason switched the focus of his major.

“I knew early on in high school that I had the technical abilities of an engineer, but I didn’t know which type of engineer I wanted to be,” Jason said. “After a semester of studying electrical engineering, I had to sit back and evaluate my interests in what I was really passionate about. I chose industrial engineering, which evaluates current processes that are in place in fields like manufacturing and better optimizes those processes.”

Jason wanted his fellow students to know there are times when you will make mistakes in your studies, but the important thing is to learn from them. Also, learn at your own pace because everyone is different.

Kimberly Guzman, an architectural engineering major, wanted to follow a science, technology, engineering and math pathway for her career.

“I knew I wanted to do something in engineering,” Kimberly said. “Looking at the courses that UTA offered, I knew that I wanted to take those classes and I decided on architecture.”

Kimberly echoed the thoughts of her fellow students about not neglecting their mental health. She encouraged students to take time out of each day to have fun and take a break from the books.

“If you really need a break, take it,” Kimberly said. “School is meant to be a fun experience, so it should not always be stressful.”

We at UTA Libraries wish everyone a successful spring semester. Our staff can help you find the resources you seek and answer questions. Good luck, Mavs.
