I would like to introduce Amy Castillo, new Department Head of Access and Discovery for the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries! She has nearly 20 years of experience in libraries and comes to us from the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University.

Alexandra Pirkle (AP): As a way of introducing yourself in this current environment, what piece of media (book/movie/TV show/album/etc.) would you say best represents yourself? Why?

Amy Castillo (AC): I love Grand Designs, the UK television show that follows homeowners through the process of building their dream dwelling. It’s amazing to see something go from idea on paper to the stage of a family settling in and that progression over time. Sometimes there’s delays and detours but I feel it provides an honest view of the process. Crafting something takes work and I enjoy seeing those stages as it comes together.

AP: What three words best describe your personal aesthetic (e.g. cozy, eclectic, whimsical, vintage, etc.)?

AC: Inquisitive, analytical, and sincere.

AP: What makes you most excited to work for UTA Libraries?

AC: Is it cliché to say the people and environment? This is such a gem of a library; everyone has been so warm and welcoming and getting to be back at my alma mater is awesome. There are so many cool events, activities, and spaces for the community here. I’m also thrilled and feel very privileged to be leading such a dedicated and hard-working group within Access and Discovery.

AP: What is something about you that others would be surprised to know?

AC: I knit and spin yarn. I used to run a yarn blog where I’d review yarn brands and shops several years ago called Compositions of Wool (it’s deactivated now). It was a neat way to connect with other fiber enthusiasts. I am still surprised to this day that I had readers from New Zealand!

That's so cool, Amy! Thank you for the interview, and we are excited to have you on board.
