This interview was conducted by our editorial assistant, Sophie Spruce.

I would like to introduce Hang Pham-Vu, new Digital Publishing Specialist for the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries! She is coming to us after graduating from UTA in 2020 and has spent a lot of time in libraries over the years.

Hang Pham-Vu, new Digital Publishing Specialist

Sophie Spruce (SS): As a way of introducing yourself to the rest of the library staff in this current environment, what piece of media (book/movie/tv show/album/etc.) would you say best represents yourself? Why?

Hang Pham-Vu (HP): BoJack Horseman. Even after finishing the show, I find myself constantly coming back to it. It makes you feel every emotion—sorrow, anger, euphoria—with its hilarious storytelling and deeply flawed characters. It portrays the highs and lows of existence while navigating the unique and inherently human experience, which is something that I try to do every day.

SS: What makes you excited to work for UTA Libraries?

HP: Coming out of post-graduate life, I'm excited by the prospect to learn and grow during my time as a Digital Publishing Specialist.

SS: What is your earliest and/or most impactful memory of being in a library?

HP: Back in high school, I would spend every morning, lunch, and free period in my school's library, where I would sit at the wooden tables to study for class, read books, or chat with my friends. Even in college, I spent more time at the library than at home! So, rather than having just one specific memory, I'm grateful for the culmination of experiences granted to me by the libraries in which I've had the pleasure of setting foot.

SS: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

HP: I've been given a lot of valuable guidance over the years, but I've been most reassured by this particular piece of advice: Everything will work out as it's meant to.

SS: What is something about you that others would be surprised to know?

HP: I can finish a word search in under a minute! I have an app on my phone that gives me word searches daily, and I've never missed a day.

Thank you for the interview, Hang. We are excited to have you on board!
