To enhance academic collaboration, UTA Libraries has launched the Research Mavs program this month. This student-led initiative aims to teach research skills and assist students one-on-one with their research.

Isabel Torrez, a Research Mavs team member studying aerospace engineering, stated that this program will be a valuable resource for students to learn or sharpen their research skills.

“The Research Mavs are students who help other students. We give research consultations to help with projects, papers and presentations, but it is not limited to just that,” Isabel said. “We give help to anything that is research-related. Even if you don’t have an assignment and want to learn how to use a database better, we can help you.”

The Research Mavs’ office is on the third floor of the UTA Central Library in Room 308. Students can book an appointment for a consultation online through the Libraries’ website, but walk-ins are always welcome. If students work on a project from home, a Research Mavs team member monitors the live online chat to answer any questions.

Each Research Mav team member brings their unique experiences to the table to help others.

Research Mav Luke Schmerse, a mechanical engineering major, stated that the team’s diverse background will help them connect with their peers as they teach these skills.

“With everyone having a different major and life experience, I feel that some of them may be better suited to help people that might be experiencing something similar,” Luke said. “I feel that those experiences will be pretty helpful for people studying the same thing.”

Luke shared that when students come in for help, the Research Mavs will connect them with resources and teach them how to use the Libraries’ databases.

He noted that they will have a new sense of confidence once they leave.

Isabel shared Luke’s feelings about the importance of this resource at the UTA Central Library. She looks forward to helping students learn these vital skills that will help them at the university and other avenues in life.

“I encourage people to stop by the research center if they need help with research. The Research Mavs can help you quite a lot and walk you through the whole process,” she said. “Instead of just fragmented bits and pieces of knowledge of how to research, the Research Mavs can help in that process quite a bit.”

We at UTA Libraries look forward to providing students with more tools to succeed in their academic careers. The Research Mavs are one of the ways we are happy to partner with you on your higher education journey.
