Daria Mendez knew she wanted to work in education but not necessarily teach. As she explored career choices, her love of books and reading drew her to work in the library field. Daria is one of the newest staff members here at UTA Libraries.

"It was the general sense of my passion for learning and reading that led me to this career path. I knew that I wanted to do something and be around books," Daria said. "Whenever I went to school, I started learning and diving into what libraries are doing and what they have been progressing into over the years. It kind of solidified that interest."

Daria stated that she has a big passion for working to make information readily available to everyone, which is of extreme importance in today's ever-changing world. She noted that from what she has seen that UTA Libraries works hard to provide that service to its patrons.

At UTA Libraries, Daria works as an acquisition specialist. In this role, Daria receives requests directly from patrons for new materials they want to see made a part of the library's collection. This model is different from the public library, where books and items are ordered based on trends and what is currently popular.

When Daria was applying for jobs, one of the points that made UTA Libraries stand out to her was how the library works to welcome everyone. She shared that this is reflected in the events the library hosts and its resources.

"I appreciate that the library wants to be very inclusive and diverse," Daria said. "Not only welcoming diversity into the space physically but acquiring materials that reflect that."

She added that one of the physical ways UTA Libraries is accomplishing that goal to become more inclusive and diverse is by creating the new Rainbow Lounge on the third floor. Through this project, Daria has helped to acquire and prepare materials for the lounge. She feels proud to be able to have had a hand in this important project.

Daria added that she wanted to thank everyone on staff who has made her feel welcome.
