Maverick Kitchen hosted its most recent cooking workshop in The Studios on the first floor of the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries on March 24th.

During this session, participants learned a brief history of ramen and how to prepare a healthy version of the student-friendly meal, including soft-boiled eggs and chicken katsu.

Grace Backus, Experiential Learning Events Coordinator, walked students through the preparation of the food.

“Maverick Kitchen provides a space for students to learn basic life skills, while also promoting healthy food choices,” Backus said. “UTA Libraries is proud to host events in the newly opened Studios where students can build a sense of belonging with each other while learning something new.”

Kennedy Long, a freshman majoring in advertisement design, was drawn by the promise of ramen. She felt the event was a nice beak from the pressures of college.

“College is all about studying… if you learn new things while eating delicious foods, it can get better,” Long said.

Maverick Kitchen is also an opportunity for students to connect, according to Adrin Elias, a freshman in aerospace engineering. He looked forward to eating ramen but also saw the event as a chance to socialize.

“It brings a sense of community to UTA,” Elias said. “This is another opportunity for students who are not in clubs or organizations to interact.”

After finding success in their cooking ventures, both students got to enjoy the reward of their labor. Long feels she will use her new skill set in future and believes other students should attend Maverick Kitchen, too.

“Come here—you’ll get great experience,” Long said. “And then you get to eat the food!”

The next Maverick Kitchen, which features vegan cooking, is set for April 28th. Interested students can RSVP now on MavOrgs.
