Preparations are underway for the UTA Libraries Datathon that will take place on April 15. The 24-hour Central Library event will test participants' analytical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Rubab Shahzad, a data visualization librarian, stated that this event would challenge students' ability to solve complex problems quickly.

"At the Datathon, students will be given data sets, or they will be asked to collect their own data set. They will be given a problem statement and will use that data to solve that particular problem," Rubab said. "They score points with each challenge they solve. Teams with the highest points will get (better) prizes."

Rubab stated that the four-person teams would learn crucial data skills as they participate in challenges throughout the library. These skills include networking, building relationships, teamwork and problem-solving.

Along with the challenges, the Datathon will have several workshops. Some topics covered in the workshops include machine learning, augmented reality, data visualization and intro to data science.

The final schedule of the event has not been finalized at this time, but several groups have come on board as sponsors. One company that is a sponsor is MathWorks, which is a leading developer of mathematical computing software for engineers and scientists.

Company representatives will be demonstrating its MatLab programming platform. This platform is designed specifically for engineers and scientists to analyze and develop systems and products.

Other local sponsors at the event include the UTA Computer Science and Math Departments.

People or companies interested in becoming a sponsor for the event can send an email to datathon@uta.edu. They can also email Rubab at rubab.shahzad@uta.edu

The event is free to UTA and students from area colleges or universities. Register at https://datathon.library.uta.edu/
