Every great journey begins with that first step; research papers and projects are no different. To help in that journey, UTA Libraries will introduce a new service, the Research Mavs, this semester.
The Research Mavs are a group of librarian-trained researchers with the knowledge to help people find the information and resources they seek.
Collin Stephenson, Research Success librarian, stated this program aids in success because students are more comfortable working with someone on their level rather than a library staff member.
"This type of program is already available at a lot of other university libraries. They have shown good results with the type of engagement they are getting with students," Collin said. "Students feel confident and inspired by working with a peer and have greater overall success when they take advantage of these services."
The program is anticipated to start at the Central Library in March with 10 students in Research Mavs roles. There is a possibility that the program may be expanded to the West Campus Library in the CAPPA building and the Science and Engineering Library in Nedderman Hall in the future.
"All of our Research Mavs are going to start with a deep dive on research training as well as customer service training," Collin said. "The training will equip our Research Mavs with everything they need to know from basic questions like, 'how do I access this?' to more complex ones."
Collin stated that one of the program's long-term goals is for the Research Mavs to offer expanded services like hosting a workshop to teach people vital research skills. With the research skills being taught, Collin feels this program will set people up for success.
Updates about this program will be posted on the UTA Libraries website and social media sites.
