Film lovers will have the opportunity to watch a classic picture, "The Mark of Zorro," as a part of the  Hispanic Heritage Month celebration during Silent Film Night at UTA Libraries. Silent Film Night will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Milaun Murry, an Experiential Learning librarian, stated that the 1920s film "The Mark of Zorro" is a great film that everyone will enjoy. It is also a culturally significant movie.

"We wanted to choose a film with some historical significance to the Latin community. That film was chosen for many reasons. One is for the story behind it. It was based on a true story of an individual of Hispanic descent from California," Milaun said. "It is a brilliant movie. The musical score for it is phenomenal."

According to the Los Angeles Times, the character Zorro is believed to be based on Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo, who was a Mexican American outlaw during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s.

The 1920s film features Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery, Sr. It is based on the 1919 story "The Curse of Capistrano" by Johnston McCulley.,

Silent Film Night will take place on The Studio's main stage at the UTA Central Library on the first floor. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 6 p.m.

"We are going to be using our media wall for that and turning the area around it into a little mini theater," Milaun said. "We are going to try to make it feel like a step back in time."

Milaun stated she hoped students would dress up for the occasion as if they were attending a silent film back in the 1920s.

For more information about the film, check out the UTA Libraries website at https://libraries.uta.edu or the libraries' social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
