Mayank Dave didn’t expect to work for the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries throughout his computer science master’s program when he applied in 2019.

Two years later and on the brink of graduation, Dave continues to serve as a student lead in the Libraries Studios, gaining unparalleled professional development and support that he will carry into his future.

Dave is one of a dozen Libraries student employees graduating in December 2021.

“Mayank is a stellar employee, and someone we have come to rely on in the Studios,” said Paul Carlile, coordinator for the Studios and the Libraries tech lending program. “We are excited for him to graduate and move forward into the next phase of his career.”

Dave originally applied to work in The Basement, the Libraries premier gaming space, but when the pandemic hit, Dave jumped at the opportunity to begin working with the Studios team.

“I wanted to interact with lots of people, which working in the Studios allowed me to do,” Dave said.

Dave’s Studios role involved helping students navigate the audio and visual editing software available at UTA Libraries as they worked on academic and personal projects

These opportunities in the Studios helped Dave cultivate the most significant transferrable skill he developed while working for the Libraries: a deep sense of customer service.

“I'm always trying to help someone out with best of my abilities,” Dave said. “That’s really been instilled in me, and I would definitely use that skill if I'm opening my business down the road or working for a company that values the same customer-centric goals.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Dave encourages his fellow Mavericks to apply for open student positions at the Libraries.

“[You] should definitely apply,” Dave said. “[You’ll] interact with lots of new people, including coworkers, and [you’ll] learn new skills.”

In addition to the skills gained and professional development, Dave also emphasized the overall positive experience of working at the Libraries.

“It was a fun journey for me,” he said.
