Plans are in the works for UTA Libraries to host its second summer camp, which will run from July 31 through Aug. 4. The weeklong day camp will provide children with activities related to the theme, “Legends and Lore: Storytelling Through Gameplay.”

Morgan Brickey- Jones, Director of Community Engagement, stated that last year’s camp, “Camp Cosmos,” was well received by both campers and parents. This year’s camp will be just as exciting with new and returning activities.

“Last year, the 3D modeling activity was really popular. So, we will be doing 3D modeling again, but this time they will be making characters,” Morgan said. “We will also do some stop-motion animation stories with the characters they created. So that will be exciting for them.”

Morgan said campers would visit the Special Collections Department to explore maps and artifacts related to the camp’s overall theme.

Campers will make a trip to the UTA planetarium. At the planetarium, they will see a show about ancient Maya stories connected with the constellations.

Some of the other activities related to the camp include a Dungeons and Dragons session and using Mario Game Maker in The Basement.

The Basement is not only a recreational space where people can play against each other in video games and tabletop games, but it is also a space for learning through different workshops.

Each day the camp runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with activities planned throughout the day. The cost for the camp is $150 per child. The registration fee covers the cost of lunch, snacks, admission to the planetarium, and supplies used in daily activities.

The camp is open to children ages nine to 12 years old.

People who have questions about the upcoming camp can email Morgan at morgan.brickeyjones@uta.edu.

Morgan expressed her thanks for the help she has received from departments across the library. She noted that without their help, this camp would not be possible.

We at UTA Libraries look forward to providing your child with a fun and memorable time here on campus at the “Legends and Lore: Storytelling Through Gameplay.”
