Taking the technical out of technology is how Geoff Guynn approaches his job at UTA Libraries.

He has seen large and small issues throughout the library as a personal computer specialist. Geoff can look at the problem, diagnose it and reconnect people to their devices quickly so the mission of serving the university community continues.

His interest in computers grew early in Geoff’s career.

“I helped people in the computer lab in college at the University of North Texas. I had a love and aptitude for it. So, I applied for a job in the computer lab where I was working at the time in the library and got it,” Geoff said. “From there, I got promoted into a junior network administrator role there. I moved on from there and became tech support for all the staff at seven different libraries.”

Over the past 23 years, Geoff has worked in a tech support role spanning several libraries and companies. Nine years were spent working at Apple, where he provided phone support. He shared that several notable people called up for assistance with their device, which included actors and even a well-known magician.

At UTA Libraries, Geoff not only troubleshoots problems for people but is one of the first staff members a new employee meets to set up their computer system. Geoff and others in the Library Systems and Technology do the software installations for both public and individual office computers.

While computers and technology have a strong interest for Geoff in his personal life, outside of work, you can find him on the tennis court or at the gym pumping iron.

“I had lessons when I was 11, and that is when I developed an interest in tennis. I had never played before,” Geoff said “Right now, my favorite player is Carlos Alcaraz (currently ranked No. 1 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals). I prefer doubles over singles and the team aspect. I love the fact that tennis is such a mental game, and it also helps me stay fit.

Along with Tennis, Geoff likes to spend time traveling with his wife, Donnell. One of their recent trips was to Colorado, where they did a guided four-wheel drive trek up into the mountains. Geoff looks to eventually travel to Europe, hoping to visit Italy.

Over the past several months, the LST team has been busy setting up all of the computers and technology throughout the library that was purchased through federal funds.

Geoff shared his excitement about how this new technology will positively transform the way students can access information and staff members’ ability to help.

We share Geoff’s excitement with everything that is taking place in the library in time for the fall semester. UTA Libraries is proud to have dedicated and hardworking team members in LST who work tirelessly. Thank you, Geoff and LST.
