One of the newest staff members at UTA Libraries is not new but has called the library home since 2018, where he has worked as a student employee. Kevin Huynh joined the full-time staff as the Open Educational Resources Coordinator in November.

As part of the Open Educational Resources team, Kevin supports faculty members in identifying, using, customizing, creating and publishing teaching and learning materials that are made available at no cost to UTA students. These materials include textbooks, videos, quizzes, learning modules, and courseware. Funding for these projects comes from the UTA CARES Grand Program, which UTA Libraries sponsor.

As the OER Coordinator, Kevin works hand-in-hand with faculty members to ensure their item gets published. He works to make sure that workflow in the publishing process will continue to move forward and “run smoothly.” He works directly with Jessica McClean, OER Director, and grant recipients coordinating efforts to get items published.

Kevin stated one of the most exciting things about his job is the chance to work with a wide range of people from different backgrounds and experiences.

“As a graduate research assistant, I mainly dealt with in-house projects,” Kevin said. “As a coordinator, I now have the opportunity to speak with a lot more faculty and a lot more people in the different departments in the library.”

Kevin stated that having a resource such as OER is extremely valuable because it provides an excellent outlet for faculty members to have their works published and is another resource for students to tap into and use.

To help get OER more name recognition among the UTA community and beyond, Kevin will work on promoting the department. Some of this promotion will be done through more outreach programs and information sessions with faculty members to showcase OER’s work at the university.

Kevin expressed his thanks for the warm welcome he received since joining the UTA Libraries staff.

“It has been great,” Kevin said. “While I have been here for a long while, it feels like I am coming back home.”
