Her love of history and helping people is what excites Lainie Allen about working at UTA Libraries. She brings a wealth of knowledge to her position as a library specialist, where she works to impart that wisdom to the students she supervises and mentors daily.

Lainie is one of the supervisors at the One Desk on the second floor of the Central Library. Before coming to the university, she studied overseas at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, earning a master’s degree in museum studies and information science.

“I love history and want to work in a museum library eventually. In my working sphere, I had worked in archiving and libraries before, but I wanted to diversify and vary my (experience) up. That is why I pursued a museum studies degree at the University of Glasgow,” Lainie said. “I feel like information studies, which is libraries, archives and museums, really benefit from understanding how each approach a topic.”

While in Scotland, Lainie had access to several museums that provided her with a chance to study items that were a part of significant moments in history.

“Glasgow was a great opportunity. They had so many museums they had direct connections to, and the building with my classes had three different collections. So, you got direct engagement,” Lainie said. “I got the chance to handle objects from Captain James Cook’s second voyage and (items) from the National Digital Scottish Archives.”

Lainie feels that her experience studying overseas helps her relate to the students she works with at the library and opens the door for conversations.

“I think that (studying abroad) helps to understand some of the students that are lonely. It is not easy to leave everything,” Lainie said. “One of my students received their residence card, which is a big deal. It is exciting to see that they were able to achieve it.”

In her supervisory role, Lainie sets the schedules for 13-24 students at the One Desk and helps to oversee its operation. However, she feels that is only part of her responsibility.

“Since I did a background in leadership studies (as an undergrad at Texas A&M), I focus on using those skills to help empower my students and help them identify what they want to do for their future,” Lainie said. “Some students know what they want to do and need certain tweaking in their skills. Others are lost and are changing their degrees, and that is very valid because this is a journey.”

Lainie stated she feels honored to be a mentor to the students and provide them with the guidance she has gained from her life experiences.
