In her role as a Metadata Supervisor at UTA Libraries, Sunday Phillips works to provide library patrons with the information they need as they search for an item.

Sunday joined UTA Libraries more than 25 years ago after immigrating to the United States from the Philippines. She first worked at the North Campus Library before joining the staff here at the Central Library a year later.

"I really like cataloging, which is why I stayed here so long. I had good mentors, librarians, and assistants during this time," Sunday said. "This job is more in the back end, but you still have an impact because your metadata has to be accurate, so people can easily find a book or item."

Her role at UTA Libraries Sunday is a part of the Access and Discovery Department, comprised of Acquisitions, Digitization, Metadata, Resource Delivery, and Stacks Management. This combination of roles in a single department helps to provide access and delivery of library services to patrons.

Sunday and her team work to catalog each new item that comes to the library. In this process, they create a searchable record that will include biographical information about the item.

The biographical information can include such things as the name of the publisher, a table of contents, and a summary of the item. Most of the time, information about the item is available, but other times a record has to be created from scratch.

With all of the large projects that the metadata team has been given, she credits the strong teamwork that everyone puts in that has been the key to its success. She stated, "I love cataloging, and this is a good department to work with."

During her time at the university, Sunday has seen many changes on campus and at UTA Libraries. She feels that these changes help to serve the growing student population now and into the future.

"We have so many programs that are creative," Sunday said. "We are engaging our students as a whole, which is why we are always ranked one of the number one places at the university that helps students."
